1971 – 1978 Eagle Crest GC, Garner, NC

The Pro shop was once a milking barn for the farm's cowsAt the age of 14, I was working as greenskeeper at Eagle Crest GC, and it was there that I developed an interest in golf club assembly, repair and fitting. I became an apprentice to the head clubmaker and developed basic clubmaker skills on-the-job. This experience and newly gained skill set lead to my decision to pursue professional clubmaking as a career.

1978 -1988  Carolina Custom Golf,  Raleigh, NC

I started with Carolina Custom Golf as retail store manager responsible for operations, sales, and equipment repair. My desire to focus on clubmaking and club-fitting led to specializing on running the Custom Club Department. In this capacity, I gained hands-on experience and also increased the club repair services for golf courses in the area from 50 to over 800 clients. I became proficient in refinishing and restoring wooden clubs. I also began teaching the fundamentals of golf as a part-time job. Most importantly, I established a large and loyal following of local golfers depending upon my clubmaking expertise.

1988-1989 - Golf of Raleigh, Raleigh, NC

During this brief period, I experienced the opportunity of managing a new retail golf outlet and gained many necessary business management skills. Lacking a club repair facility at this site, I took the opportunity to establish David Bass Golf as an independent club repair and training business to serve my growing and loyal client base.

1989-present     David Bass Golf

David Bass Golf became very successful enabling me to focus full time developing my new business. My first location was a converted horse barn in my back yard. I provided club repair work for over 75 golf facilities and over 2500 clients out of my back yard shop.

Based on business growth I was able, in 1995, to move to a more convenient public location in Clayton, NC and in 1997, I leased Triangle Golf Center in Raleigh, NC and opened a second David Bass Golf outlet where I was able to combine teaching and clubmaking facilities with a driving range to provide my clients a full range of golf services.

Due to the inability to renew my lease in 1999, I consolidated my operations into one center headquartered at Raleigh Golf Association (RGA). Being co-located with the oldest and prestigious Raleigh golf course suited my existing client base and afforded the opportunity to further expand this base with the high volume of customers at RGA. I established business relationships with several major golf component manufacturers Infiniti, Zero Tolerance, and Kent Sports to provide my clients with affordable high performing custom golf clubs. My operation at RGA also provided the visibility and opportunity to form a business relationship with the North Carolina State University Golf Program. Head Golf Coach, Richard Sykes, hired me to provide exclusive club-fitter and repair services for the Men’s golf team. I also became affiliated with Indoor Fairways, Inc., a newly opened indoor golf facility. I provided computerized swing analysis, training, and club-fitting services.

Based on my expanding reputation as an award winning PCS Regional Clubmaker, in 2002, I was offered the opportunity to locate David Bass Golf at Hillandale Golf Course in Durham, NC. This move enabled David Bass Golf to maintain close affiliation with a premier golf course, continue to serve my extensive following, and become associated with one of America’s top 100 Retail Pro Shops. At Hillandale, I perform a full range of golf services including repair, professional fittings, swing analyses, and instruction utilizing the Vector Launch Monitor and the Dart-Fish Swing Analyzer computerized systems. I assisted in the design of the Hillandale Custom Fitting Center. This all-weather, specialized center is stocked with over 800 demo clubs and computerized analysis equipment. It is dedicated to provide the most modern and efficient club-fitting services in the North Carolina region. I evaluated and contributed to the selection of the “Makser Golf” line of equipment as the Official Custom Equipment for Hillandale. I am now a member of Adams Golf professional staff representing their line of equipment.
